Iman Uthman Yang was employed by the mosque more than twenty years ago and was honoured to be promoted to imam. He is from Shandong province and grew up in an Islamic family and after graduating from the Beijing Islamic Institute he headed to Pakistan International Islamic University for further study where he became proficient in Urdhu and Arabic in addition to Mandarin. When the mosque was looking for an Imam, the fact that he knew Chinese Muslim culture as well as Pakistani culture made him a very suitable candidate for this position working with Hong Kong's Muslim communities who come from different backgrounds. He was about 20 at this time and when he came to Hong Kong he also learned Cantonese. Through his strength in languages and understanding of different cultures he gradually became a capable Muslim community leader who could coach and lead a diverse Muslim community.
He thinks that Islam is a very tolerant religion and he believes that different religions should respect each other. He feels that there has been a some negative portrayal of Islam in the western media and he tries to be unaggressive and not overly pushy in promoting the faith. He thinks that people should develop an understanding of the Quran and come to the religion voluntarily. The mosque opens from 5 am to 10 pm and these are his basic working hours, with other times based on the needs of his congregation.
